Eyeglass Recycling Project

     Angel Hands of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Association of Black Storytellers co-sponsored, The Labone Leo Club and The Ghana Association of African Storytellers Gbawe Village Eyeglass & Hearing Aid Project.

EYEGLASS RECYCLING PROJECT 2001 The Accra Premier Lion's Club Sponsored a free eye screening and distribution of eye glasses On October 20, 2001. The sponsors were Angelhands-NEO, Atlantis Radio, Choice FM Radio, Emmanuel Eye Care Centre and Kpehe St. Paul's Catholic church. The attendance was over 600 people. There was six nurses, one Eye Specialist from Emmanuel Eye Care Centre A representative from Choice FM Radio to carry out a live interview of the event. The activity started at 9:30 am. Members and sponsors arrived at 6am to set up for the day long screenings The eye screening exercise entailed the testing of sight, administering of drugs and recommending serious cases to the appropriate specialist. Prescriptive drugs were not free but were sold at a reduced price. The turn-out was so large that they were unable to service all the people. The Preimere Lions and Leo club have made arrangements to do the exercise again since it was such a success. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Gbawe Village is located in the Southern part of Ghana near the capital of Accra. It is a small deprived village community with stone quarrying as it's main occupation. Stone quarries have provided a lively hood for the people and have also left them with adverse affects to their health. Eye disease, hearing defects and chest pains are a few of the health problems in this community. Stone quarrying in this area is not mechanical, but manual. Thus the hammer is the main tool used for the job. The people are in need of glasses to assist them solve the numerous eye problems. The people also suffer from chest pains and hearing loss as a result of their work.

The first project was compeleted in Ghana, August 5, 2000. Angel Hands of NEO and the Cleveland Association of Black Storytellers are pleased to have collected approximately 1000 pair of recycled prescription eyeglasses, 200 pair of protective eyeglasses, 100 frames, 100 pair of mixed prescription sunglasses, reading glasses and regular sunglasses, as well as 50 hearing aids. In all the disbtribution aided more than 1,100 persons.
